Initial Ideas

At the beginning of the project, I focused particularly on watercolour, but I soon moved towards various other mediums, including Acetate, Acrylic, Cut-out and various methods of Photoshop enhancements. By exploring these various mediums, I could focus on possible outcomes when I progressed through the project.

I also continued further into my own research by recording photos of various architectural buildings that inspired me, these places included Mexico, London, Portsmouth, Brighton and Nottingham.

The Initial Research

I began my research by looking at Veronica Lawlor, Lapin and Gerard Michel, all of which had different approaches that I wanted to delve further into. I particularly liked Lawlors linear effect and the use of colour against black and white. An affect found exceptionally powerful.

Recreations of Lawlor's work

While recreating her work I looked at pencil, watercolour and stitch as they were all compelling ways of presenting her work. By pushing her work into my own style, I chose to adapt one of my own images and present it the style of her work (See Below).

Lapin looked at a more animated approach, I focused on watercolour when pursuing this artist. I enjoyed colours were exaggerated in some pieces to make them more powerful, in some instances images were abstracted, a factor that really intrigued my perception of the artist!

When looking at Gerard Michel, I continued to use water colour, however I also looked at the use of fine-liner. I enjoyed how Michel took a more realistic approach to his work, a path I really wanted to explore!

The Brief.

My chosen theme is Architecture. I aim to take this topic further at university, so when this project title came up, it was a definite path to head down to really help focus my view on Architecture. I knew that with a subject so broad, I could really delve into the different mediums and techniques to truly exploit the topic area.

Architecture mind map.

I began this project by presenting all my ideas through a mind map, showing potential artists, mediums and buildings I could explore throughout the project. I also had chance to develop my photography skills by snapshotting buildings that truly captured my attention. I haven't got a preferred medium, as I have always enjoyed experimenting to get the best out of my work. Architecture will truly help emphasise this. I aim to vary from full observation and close-ups of buildings, whilst applying them to my own style. I particularly like Veronica Lawlor and her continual line style, I feel that her work is 'busy' and keeps the observer intrigued and involved within her work. This is an artist I will definitely look at whilst progressing though this project. Along with this, I aim to develop my skills with a craft knife and look further into digital enhancements through Photoshop. I feel that these mediums have the potential to create powerful outcomes and may be used to create my final piece.
